DS Smith Packaging in Livingstone is the largest corrugated board factory in Scotland, supplying pre- and post-print packaging to companies throughout the UK and Ireland. Although a long-time customer of BOBST, the Livingstone factory did not buy its new peristaltic pumps without doing its research. "We started by rigorously testing one during the second half of 2012," explains Technical Manager Tommy Coia. The results were very decisive: "six pumps were installed in 2013 on a 6-colour MASTERFLEX 160-A 6, with the same excellent results."The aim was to reduce printing costs and optimise the quality of ink flow in the machine. "The new pumps met our expectations." In terms of savings, they enabled between 1 and 1.2 kg of ink to be recovered per printing unit, per cleaning cycle - and all without using any compressed air. In terms of flow quality, "they enabled us to reduce the formation of foam and more precisely manage the ink flow," adds Tommy Coia.
Those are the concrete results, as well as the method. Tommy Coia also cites the pumps’ simple start-up and operating procedures, as well as their very low maintenance requirements. "For these reasons our teams have been very satisfied with them." In addition, the Technical Manager is completely happy with the quality of the BOBST service.
"We have notified the other DS Smith factories of the performance of these new pumps," concludes Tommy Coia. "I strongly recommend them!" There are also plans to install these pumps on more machines, including the plant’s BOBST FFG/DRO (formerly Martin) machines, with the assistance of BOBST technicians.
