Miraclon contribution for on the latest feature trends in flexo platemaking

Flexo has evolved significantly from its ‘traditional’ capabilities, practices and processes to a new era of ‘modern’ flexo that’s consistent, highly capable, efficient and more sustainable. This transformation to modern flexo, a standardized and sustainable manufacturing process, is largely enabled by FLEXCEL NX Technology and the applications expertise of the Miraclon team.

The greatest advancements in flexo platemaking lie in patterning, particularly multi-form surface patterns.

Miraclon has a product innovation strategy that ensures that all new products and features build on, and strengthen, the core FLEXCEL NX value proposition. Every innovation brings an enhanced level of consistency or capability – both in platemaking and/or on press – supporting the transformation to modern flexo.

Core Technology overview
Miraclon has the technology and knowledge to help customers achieve the benefits of modern flexo. Here are a few examples of results our customers have achieved:
- 50% decrease in press stoppages
- 15% increase in press speed
- 2x improvement in plate life
- 23% decrease in ink usage
- 50% decrease in material waste

FLEXCEL NX Technology eliminates variability in the platemaking process and provides predictable ink transfer that leads to tangible productivity improvements in the press room. It starts with a precise and consistent platemaking process, consisting of patented imaging technology, unique Thermal Imaging Layer film and oxygen-free lamination process. The result is a FLEXCEL NX plate that has the industry’s only true flat top dots and – very importantly – includes a choice of multi-form surface patterns that enable superior control and ink flow transfer, which yield measurable improvements in production.

Multi-form patterning – the key to new flexo platemaking innovation
The greatest advancements in flexo platemaking lie in patterning, particularly multi-form surface patterns.

PureFlexo™ Printing from Miraclon is enabled by the latest and most advanced iteration of multi-form surface patterning technology for the FLEXCEL NX System, building on the achievements of single form patterning (DIGICAP NX) in 2010 and double form patterning (NX Advantage) in 2016. Each of these advancements successively improved ink laydown, improving the quality, predictability, and consistency of flexo printing. PureFlexo Printing significantly reduces dot gain due to unwanted ink spread, particularly for process colors. This result is achieved by introducing triple form surface patterns.

Critical to the precision of triple form surface patterns and the development of PureFlexo Printing is the precision and 1-to-1 image reproduction possible with the FLEXCEL NX System. This combination of innovations enables Miraclon to take patterning to another level – impossible otherwise – where it is possible to combine multiple engineered patterns within the same dot.

Shine LED Lamp Kits – offering a cost-effective path to LED plate exposure
Shine LED Lamp Kits, innovated by Miraclon, offers a simple and cost-effective path to UV LED plate exposure that makes an even more consistent flexo plate. It has been recognized with multiple sustainability and innovation industry awards in 2024 and is seeing rapid adoption around the globe.

Customers can easily retrofit an existing fluorescent UV exposure system to LED and cost effectively obtain the same benefits of LED technology, at a fraction of the cost of a new LED system.

Benefits in Platemaking
Greater than 20% faster exposure times and no lamp warm up required that can save thousands in labor per year in the plate room.
Eliminate plate remakes with better exposure consistency and uniformity. Shine LED will provide consistent output with no degradation over time.
Remove the hassle of frequent bulb changes, disposal, and recalibration. LED lamps typically last 6 times longer than fluorescent – more than 5000 hours.
Reach sustainability goals with reduced waste and less power consumption.

Benefits on Press
Improved plate exposure consistency reduces unplanned press stops.
Enhanced plate uniformity provides more consistent print.
