The FINAT Sustainability Award is the leading initiative in Europe with a focus on recognizing outstanding work to advance sustainability through labelling. The competition accepts submissions in four categories: reduction of environmental impact; optimisation of recycling; reuse; and renewable materials. Entries will be judged by an independent panel of packaging experts including consultants, recyclers and brand owners. The new partnership with Packaging Europe and the Sustainable Packaging Summit aims to draw the attention of the wider packaging/FMCG value chain to sustainable innovation and best practice in labelling. As part of the collaboration, winners of the competition will be revealed at an awards ceremony during the Summit, in addition to which Packaging Europe will be publishing interviews with the shortlisted finalists and exploring the wider trends and implications of label sustainability.

“Labels are by volume a small part of a package – but a critically important component in its environmental performance, both as an enabler of packaging circularity and as a medium for communicating with consumers,” commented Packaging Europe’s brand director, Tim Sykes. “The FINAT Sustainability Award is a vitally important project, and we are delighted to collaborate with FINAT not only to share the competition with a wider audience, but as an opportunity to put labels at the centre of our thinking at the Summit and in our wider reporting.”

FINAT Managing Director Jules Lejeune remarked: “As the European association for the label sector with 600 members in around 50 countries, FINAT is committed to connect, inform and empower the label industry towards a sustainable future. With the new format of the FINAT Sustainability Awards, we are encouraging our members to put the spotlight on innovative solutions that have been developed to support their customers in reducing the overall environmental footprint of their products. The Sustainable Packaging Summit in Amsterdam is the meeting point for sustainability and innovation professionals from the labels and packaging chain in Europe. We are thankful for the opportunity offered by Packaging Europe to present the FINAT Sustainability Awards 2024 in front of this unique audience.”

As a feature of the partnership, Packaging Europe will interview all finalists about their entry, as well as providing a complimentary pass to Day 1 of the Sustainable Packaging Summit, during which the winners will be announced.

The Sustainable Packaging Summit is Europe’s leading and largest packaging sustainability event, bringing together sustainability and R&D leadership spanning the materials-packaging-FMCG value chain to confront strategic challenges and identify innovation opportunities. FINAT members are offered an exclusive 30% discount to attend the Summit; more details about the event can be found at packagingsummit.earth/2024/.
